Alkimon is our single variety extra virgin olive oil made exclusively from Koroneiki olives from Messinia, Greece, where the famous variety originated.
Today it is widely considered as probably the best variety for producing premium extra virgin olive oil.
Although the Koroneiki olive is smaller than usual, and the trees yield less oil, the variety is preferred because it yields a superior quality olive oil with low acidity, high polyphenol content and a wonderful, fresh aroma.
Today Koroneiki olive trees are widely planted in Greece, but they are ideally suited to the cultivars native microclimate of Messinia, which is warm, mild, Mediterranean and near the sea, with excellent, well drained soil. The olive trees are not artificially watered, but rely solely on rainfalls for their water.
All these factors come together in order for the tree to give a unique, highly acclaimed extra virgin olive oil with exceptional nutritional value and overall taste.
Our olives are hand-picked in late autumn while they are still green, before they change their colour to black and before they begin oxidising.
They are then moved to the olive oil press, where they pressed with state-of-the-art methods in a relatively low temperature environment – a method called cold extraction. This is done in order to keep the taste and the full amount of nutrients and polyphenols within the olive oil intact.
The product is then bottled in stainless steel tin containers and dark glass bottles, in order to protect it against oxygen and light and to make sure it reaches the consumer as fresh as when it was pressed in Messinia.
The Koroneiki variety produces extra virgin olive oil with a high content in polyphenols – valuable chemical substances found naturally in olives with antioxidant properties that can help against free radicals and may reduce the risk of heart disease and cancer. This is why virgin olive oil forms a basic part of the Mediterranean diet, famed for its health benefits. Polyphenol antioxidants do not only benefit your health, but they also give Koroneiki extra virgin olive oil it’s characteristic ‘bite’ and make it resistant to oxidation, giving it a longer shelf-life. In addition to its rich flavour and vivid colour, Koroneiki variety oil also is very low in free fatty acids.
Our Koroneiki extra virgin olive oil is highly aromatic and tastes smooth, It has a full, fruity aroma with notes of fruit, herbs and fresh grass and a peppery, nutty aftertaste, paired with a glorious golden-green colour.
