Our Wild Thyme honey has been awarded the highest accolades at the 2014 Great Taste Awards, being named a Top 50 Foods and 3 golden star winner, as well as Ambient Product of the Year 2014. It is an achievement unmached before by any Greek product taking part in the competition. The awards came after rigorous and repeated blind tastings and out of a total of 10.000 entries, the judges singled out 50 products, including our thyme honey.
Here are some of the judges’ comments:
“This lovely honey has a deep golden colour and a wonderful intense thyme flavour. We are fantasizing about drizzling it over some thick Greek yoghurt”.
“Glorious amber colour and viscous texture. There are intense floral notes and the aroma and flavour of thyme come through beautifully (…). A truly delicious honey”.
“…It has a real purity of flavour. We love the thyme flavour you are left with on the palate. Beautiful – well done.”
Wild thyme honey is the most emblematic honey of the Aegean. Wild thyme (thymus capitatus), with its distinct blue-purple flowers, grows in abundance on the rocky, barren wind- and sea-beaten shores of Andros, an island in the north Cyclades. It is the only plant on the island that fully blossoms in June and July, and from which the bees can collect nectar and pollen at this time of year.
The result is a dense monofloral honey with a dark colour and an intense, complex flavor of wild thyme. This unique honey, with its fragrant smell, nutritional value and scientifically proven high anti-infectious and healing properties, has always been highly prized by locals and visitors alike.
